Hellen

is a creature made of sparkles and magic.
a photograph of me coming out of the Secession gallery in Vienna

I was born in Germany, lived very briefly in the USA, and for the last decade or so in England. My hobby when speaking English is watching people attempt to place my accent.

Archaeology is my first love; I got a BA in Archaeology from Durham University in 2009, and just completed an MA in Archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East at UCL. My main interests are trade (especially naval), merchants, and inter-cultural contact and exchange. Although I wrote my dissertation on the Eastern Mediterranean, I’m trying to branch out into European archaeology to learn more about my own past.

Apart from archaeology, I nerd out hardcore about science, speculative fiction, and languages. I speak German and English (and frequently Denglish), a little bit of French, and am learning Japanese. On my to do list currently are Greek, Arabic, and perhaps a North Germanic language.

私は四年間から日本語を習っています。最近、大学院に入ったから、あまり勉強の時間がありません。時々Lang-8に日本語でブログをします。よければ、日記を読んで、間違いを直してください。

Other things I enjoy include: books, putting “too much” salt on my food, comics, robots, feminism/social justice, statistics, worldbuilding and conlanging, queering everything, ice tea, critical thinking, gender and sexuality history, outdated internet memes, games (video, board, and tabletop role-playing flavours), complaining about English bread, and paying with exact change.
